Empadronamiento, step by step

Registering at your town hall is the first piece of Spanish bureaucracy every new arrival meets — and the certificate it produces unlocks your TIE, healthcare and school places. Here's how it works for your housing situation.

Your situation

The documents change with how you're housed; the steps don't.

The process

Worth knowing

Every ayuntamiento runs its own version of this — forms differ, some allow online registration, and villages may skip the appointment entirely. The list above is the common denominator.

Why the padrón matters

It looks like a formality. It's actually the key to most of what comes next.

1

Your TIE needs it

The fingerprint appointment for your residence card requires a padrón certificate issued within the last three months. No padrón, no card.

2

Healthcare and schools

Public health registration and school enrolment both start from the padrón — it's how the system knows which health centre and which schools serve you.

3

It builds your history

Padrón records are one of the cleanest proofs of continuous residence in Spain — useful years later for long-term residence and citizenship.

4

Keep it current

Move house, re-register. Non-EU residents without long-term residence are also periodically asked to renew the registration — ignoring the letter can get you dropped from the register.

Settling in is part of the service

Clients get the padrón, TIE and the rest of the landing sequence organised for them — in the right order, with the right documents.
