When can I renew?

    The standard rule is that you may file from 60 days before your card expires until 90 days after it does. Filing late is still possible inside that grace period, but it can carry a penalty and it complicates travel — your card is expired while you wait. Some permits run to their own rules, so if yours is unusual, check with us rather than with a calendar.

    What happens if you miss it

    Three things worth knowing before the date creeps up on you.

    You can still file — for a while

    The window stays open for 90 days after expiry. Filing in that period is accepted, though it may bring a fine and it is not a comfortable place to be.

    Travel gets complicated

    Between expiry and your new card you are holding an expired document. Re-entering Spain and proving your status at a border is far harder without the receipt from a filed renewal.

    Gaps break continuity

    Long-term residence and citizenship both depend on unbroken legal residence. A lapsed permit can reset a clock you have been running for years.
